About the Board

Kathy Lopez-Alvarado is a Registered Nurse and her journey began because she was born to an elderly father who had open heart surgery when she was in junior high. Her dad told the nurse to teach her how to do his dressing changes so that he can go home, so the nurse taught Kathy how to change his incision dressing. Her early childhood was being curious about what was going on with her father’s health. Her father was a Veteran of the Air Force and she would go with him to the VA hospitals and she would see how this population that was serving our country was completely forgotten. She was raised on social security but was always taught by both parents that no matter what you can give to others. They would physically donate her clothes to the poorest community in Tijuana, Mexico. As a child she was involved in Girl Scouts. Kathy currently services as president of Operation Kindness.

Karen Gutierrez is a principle at a global professional consulting company, where she has worked for the past 34 years in various roles, include operations management, compliance management, and project management. Her love of giving back started with time spent with her grandparents (Mimi & Papa) and watching them do intentional acts of kindness as part of their day-to-day lives. This started her life-long love affair with finding ways to bless others across all walks of life. After being her father’s caretaker during the final years of his life and seeing how individuals in long-term care facilities are often forgotten, her passion to help this population increased. When Kathy brought up the idea of an Adopt-A-Senior program, she knew she had to be involved. Operation Kindness of Southern California was born out of this idea and she is excited about the possibilities of reaching even more people through our programs. Karen currently services as vice president of Operation Kindness.
